Grandma Draper's Sugar Cookies

Grandma Draper's Sugar Cookies

Cream 1 cup shortening (or margarine) with 2 cups sugar, add 1 egg, 1 cup thick sour milk, 1tsp of vanilla and 1/2 tsp. of nutmeg. Add 1 cup of flour mixed and sifted with 1 tsp each of salt, soda and 2 tsp. of baking powder.

Add more flour and turn out on a floured board, putting in more flour as needed. Roll rather thick, cut out cookies. Bake in a rather moderate oven (350 to 375 degrees).

Note: My kids loved this recipe growing up. We would make cookies for all of the holidays and take them to school, they were always a hit. Grandma Knoodle always said that Grandma Draper believed if a child was going to have a cookie it should be a big cookie. She would use the lid of her tea kettle as a cookie cutter and add a raisin on top.
